1969 Lotus Elan
Harry Mathews refers to the 1969 Elan as the Giant Killer”. It is a stock looking Elan but is highly modified with a Spyder tubular steel chassis and full Spyder suspension. The engine is a full race spec 195 bhp Twin Cam and has a larger radiator, billet axles and a limited slip differential. The consequences of these and other performance upgrades mean that the Elan is capable of a top speed of 140 mph and on classic car rallies all around the USA leaves the surprised drivers of older Ferraris for dead. The best way to describe this car is light and quick with extremely good handling — a wolf in sheep’s clothing!
