1972 Ferrari GTC/4
The 365 GTC/4 is one of the finest and most underrated cars that Ferrari ever produced. Only about 500 were built in the 365 GTC/4 production run between the spring of 1971 and autumn of 1972. GTC is short for Gran Turismo Coupe, indicating that the car was never going to be the most exciting car in the Ferrari stable, but it was built more as a luxury car specifically for the American market. The 365 GTC/4 is often called the ‘forgotten Ferrari’ as it is not as popular as most Ferraris, but it marked a watershed in their design. The rounded curves gave way to sharply defined edges and it is not as aggressively styled as the Daytona.
The interior was typically stark with the dashboard made up from big white on black instruments. There were no external mirrors to ruin the sleek look, but visibility was still good through the rear window. The car came with air conditioning, electric windows and more importantly, power steering which all add to the luxury of the car. The power steering adds so much to the driving experience that it takes the 365 GTC/4 into the realms of Ferrari and other great touring cars.
The 365 GTC/4 engine is the same capacity and has the same bottom half as the Daytona, but from there on it is completely different. The lower hood line required new cylinder heads to be built with new intake manifolds mounted between the camshafts. Another difference is that the five speed transmission is integral with the engine rather than mounted at the rear as in the Daytona. This car was designed for the American ‘open road’ and that is where it best performs.
